Johnson Lee :: Free Form 8

November 24th, 2010 No comments

Part 8 of the Free Form series is quite a bit shorter than the rest but jammed packed with great tracks.  It starts off very chill and relaxed with some lounge tracks but then quickly picks up the pace with some jamming deep house.  He wraps up the mix with some more lounge tracks for 42 minutes of Johnson Lee magic.

Album: Black Bobby Presents: "Presidential Sh*t: Black Bobby & His Goyard"

November 23rd, 2010 No comments

Super proud of the homie & SQUARE BIZ partner in crime on the release of his first album. Even more proud of the fact that it’s BANGIN’! NO FILLER! After two critically acclaimed mixtapes (Phat Kid Tendencies, Negro Dialect), the D.C. bred and Miami based Harvard grad hits us hard with twelve all-original tracks of straight up hip hop. Real heads know the deal. If you’ve been sleeping on Bob, now is a great time to wake up. Also, with production by D.C.’s finest (Oddisee, Best Kept Secret) and Miami’s up-n-coming beast (Soulviet), hip hop heads will not be let down.

Ballin’ Review #24 – Bloo Lagoon Village

November 15th, 2010 No comments
Thanks to my girlfriend I finally made my way over to the eastern side of Bali for a great mini-vacation weekend. About 1.5 hours drive from Sanur brought us to the Padangbai/Candidasa area and our final destination, Bloo Lagoon Village.

Bloo Lagoon bills themselves as a "sustainable tourism" complex with much of the village leaving almost no carbon footprint. Just walk through their grounds and you'll see just how much it is still a part of its natural surroundings. All the villas are unique in their own way and are VERY spacious with most having awesome views of Padangbai below (it's located on the side of a hill). If you're an outdoors-ish kinda person you'll love it, if you're more of a hotel-room introvert then the bugs will make you run back to Seminyak.

Was honestly just great to get away from south Bali and mingle with the hill people (Lothar anyone!?). Obviously the seafood everywhere is ridiculously fresh and in abundance. Also checked out Pantai Putih a lil past Candidasa for a great beach spot that i'm assuming not a lot of people know about. East Bali is pretty dope, cooler temps and less of a hassle, not to mention some great views across to the neighboring islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lombongan, and Lombok.

Moodymann :: Live Radio Nova

November 13th, 2010 No comments

This edition of the guest mixes brings us one of my favorite producer/djs: Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann.  I've been collecting this man's music since 1995 and I have yet to be disappointed.  His mysterious hypnotic style of production with a signature Detroit sound is unique and unmistakable.  I could go on and one about how much I really love his music but instead I want to share this mix from 1995 when he played live at Radio Nova in Paris.  From beginning to end it is pure KDJ goodness.  For those that aren't very familiar with him, sit back relax and prepare to be blown away.  For the rest of us, it's time to enjoy what we know is coming.

TONIGHT Black Bobby & D-Up on Univ. of Miami’s WVUM 90.5 FM

November 9th, 2010 No comments

Word em up. Tonight @ 9pm – 12am Black Bobby and myself will be on University of Miami’s WVUM (90.5 Coral Gables) “Sampled to the Soul” radio show. We’re gonna chop it up and I’m also gonna play a set of soul, funk and some of the hip hop songs that sampled those classics.

‘Sampled to the Soul’ is a series started on Freedom for the Funk that looks back at classic funk and soul songs in their original form and how they were reinterpreted as breaks, beats, and samples in hip-hop and beyond.

The much anticipated second installment will feature 2 great minds in the Miami Hip-Hop scene – Black Bobby and DJ D-Up. They will deliver there own picks of classic samples, as well as discuss the importance of sampling in both Hip-Hop and Funk music alike.

Johnson Lee :: Bangin’ (Side B)

November 7th, 2010 No comments

Side B of this mix starts off with some lounge, it progresses into a DnB vibe, and then moves back to house.  After listening to this again, this side sounds like the precursor to the Free Form series he started only a year later.
